Divorce Statistics

Did you know that the divorce rate gradually grows as adults move into the older adult bracket? According to a Moskowitz Law Group, the years between 45 and 49 are when there is the highest percentage of divorces for adults in America. In addition, the Baby Boomer generation (those that are over 50) are also getting more divorces than in the past.

Between 1990 and 2010, divorce among couples that are over 50 doubled from 4.9 per 1,000 married people to 10 per 1,000 married people. This may be in part because older adults no longer have children that they would need to fight for custody over, and no longer have to worry about separating a family with young children and ruining their kids’ childhood. Marriage longevity decreases the odds of a divorce, and there are about 3.2 divorces per 1,000 for couples that have been married over 40 years.

Interestingly enough, couples that have been married less than 10 years average at 29 divorces per 1,000 married persons. Remarriages in middle-age carry a divorce rate of 2.5 times more than a person in their first marriage. The Moskowitz Law Group shared data from the U.S. Census that was published in 2008 in their recent newsletter. The data shows that the divorce rate for couples that are between 18 and 19 is 4.9%. For those in the 20-24 age bracket, the divorce rate hovers at 6.3%.

Adults between 25 and 29 have a divorce rate of 7.9%, and those that are between 30 and 34 have a divorce rate of 10.4%. The steady increase with age is no coincidence. Adults between 35 and 39 have a 12.8% and the rate for 40-44 year olds is 16.3%. Those between 45 and 49 have a divorce rate of 18.4%, and the amount of divorces drops ever so slightly to 18.3% for those between 50 and 54. The divorce rate then decreases to 17.7% for those between 55 and 64. Elderly individuals that are ages 65 through 74 only have a 12.4% divorce rate, and those that are between 75 and 84 only have a 6.7% divorce rate. Individuals that are over the age of 85 have a 4.3% divorce rate.
